Nicaragua is the poorest country in Central America with 42.5% of residents living below the poverty line and 44% of Nicaraguans live in rural areas such as Jalapa Valley.  Reports from the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health (MINSA) indicate that 50% of the rural population has little access to basic health services, which are hampered by poverty, geographical isolation and poor roads.
